‘Emotion’ Competition Results

By Competitions, News No Comments

Many thanks to everyone who came along and participated in our first home-judged competition. Despite the technical hitches we managed to get through everything, thanks in no small part, to our volunteer critiquers (Mark, Len, Howard, Alan and Louise). They somehow kept us on track with concise and insightful comments on all of the 50 entered images. Congratulations  to Steve Gresty for taking the top spot, with Louise Acton in second and Anthony Gosling and Conor Molloy sharing 3rd place. Louise did particularly well with all three of her images in the top 10.  All of the top 10 images are now available to see under the ‘Competitions’ section of this web site.

It would be great to know how everyone thought the evening went, compared to the more usual format with an external judge. Please use the forum to leave feedback along with any ideas you might have for future competitions or have a chat with any of the committee members.

After two competitions the accumulated scores are as follows:

Conor Molloy 16, Kevin Blake 15, Paul Scott 15, Steve Gresty 14, David Tolliday 13, Louise Acton 12, Anthony Gosling 11, Vince Sparks 6, Malcolm Brunt 4, Kevin Lomax 4, and Irene Lea 1.

Next Internal Competition

By News No Comments

Just  a reminder that entries for our next competition are due in by Monday 16th November. The theme is ‘Emotion’ and it is dpi-only.  Please check your entry complies with the sizing and naming conventions and don’t leave it until the last minute !!

The competition will take place on 30th November and be judged by all members present on the night.  A tricky theme so expecting some interesting images.

First Competition Reminder

By Competitions, News

Those of you at the Library last night will already be aware that our first competition is taking place on Monday 5th October. Consequently, your entries are required by next Monday, 21st September.

This is an Open, digital-entry only competition. Most of you already know the sizing rules etc. but if you need a reminder then all the info is available under the Competition Info tab on this website.  The entry form is also there for you to download.

Please check the News page regularly for future competition updates as email reminders will no longer be sent.  We will, of course, continue to remind you at the club meetings.

Looking forward to receiving your entries.

Competition Rules Now Updated

By News

The Internal Competition rules have now been updated and can be viewed under the ‘Images and Competitions’ tab.

There is also additional info under ‘This Seasons Competitions’ about the judging method of each competition and, where appropriate, the name of the external judge.

Internal Competitions Next Season

By News

The summer will  soon be over and the forthcoming season will see some changes to our internal  competitions .  Many clubs have already moved away from the scoring of every image, towards a more critique-based affair and so we are going to be experimenting with a new approach and also trialling some alternative judging methods.

Due to the decline in print entries,  five of the six competitions will be digital-only and one will be print-only.  A print-themed evening will be held ahead of this to offer advice and practical know-how on all aspects of producing a mounted print.  All members who wish to enter will also be able to  purchase mount boards from the club at a nominal charge.   The aim of this is to encourage more entries so that hopefully, a print section for each competition may be re-introduced at a later date.  Also, of course,  prints are essential for the continued success of our annual exhibition.

The rules for competition entry are otherwise largely unchanged (the detailed instructions on this will be updated in due course).  In summary, the judge or judges will be asked to critique all images then select a winner and 9 other commended images. These will then be scored from 10 down to 1 for the purposes of our league table.

In terms of judging, two competitions will still be scored by external judges and one (Landscape) will be judged by our own Mark Helliwell.  The other two will be scored by club members – one by a selected panel and the other by all members attending the competition evening.  The exact format of these competitions will be described nearer the time but they will also involve feedback/critique of all images. It will be interesting to see how this approach compares to the external judging we are all used to and hopefully will invite much discussion on how we run future competitions.

As always, looking forward to seeing some wonderful competition entries!
