High Peak Trophy – 2018 – Silver Lining for Macclesfield

By News No Comments

We were defending the High Peak trophy at Stalybridge last night (26th November) which was being judged by Christine Widdal (http://christinewiddall.co.uk/). This is an annual competition contested between Macclesfield Camera Club, Chapel Camera Club, Bramhall Photographic Society and Stalybridge Photographic Club. It was a well contested competition with 8 PDI’s and 8 prints from each of the clubs with a maximum of two entries per photographers per club.

At the end of the first round (PDI Images) Macclesfield held a slight lead over Chapel. We managed to get 3 images held back with eventually 2 top scores of 20 points for David Tolliday’s Bearded Reedling with Nest Material and Paul Scott’s Solitude both gaining the top mark and Steve Gresty’s Coyote in the Snow scoring 19.  Chemical Beach By Anthony Gosling scoring 17, Flow by Dave Boam 17, Riga National Library by Vince Sparks, 14, Wet Rocks by Kevin Blake 14 and Zig Zag by Val Lear 17.

The second round of judging saw Chapel have 5 of their prints held back reflecting the quality of their entry, so they were able to sneak past Macclesfield and pip us at the post by 3 points. Macclesfield had one image held back which was one of only 3 images to score top marks in the print round and this was David Tolliday’s Red Fox with 20 points. Barn Owl in Winter Meadow by Steve Gresty scoring 17, Shield Maiden by Irene Lea 16, Still Afloat by Paul Scott 17, Hotel Cannobio 4 Stars By Kevin Blake 16, Sweep by Dave Boam 17, Grace by Anthony Gosling 18 and Derwentwater by Denis Jones 17.

The final scores were Bramhall 240, Stalybridge 272, Macclesfield 276 and Chapel 279, so it was so close, but we’ll take the silver medal.

Robertshaw – 2018 – Macclesfield Retain the Trophy

By Awards, Competitions, News No Comments

Well it’s been an hectic start to the season, so this is the first news item I’ve managed to post, but a good one to post none the less. On Thursday last (11th October) we were defending the Robertshaw Trophy at Leek Photographic Club. As ever there were the 5 clubs represented: Macclesfield Camera Club; Leek Photographic Club; Holmes Chapel Photographic Society; Blythe Bridge Camera Club and Crewe Photographic Society. The trophy was judged by Mike Sharples ARPS MPAGB AFIAP from Smethwick Photographic Society.

This was also the 50th year of the running of the competition so some honour was there to be defended.

The trophy is an Open PDI competition requiring 12 images with at most 3 images per author per club making 60 images in total. The standard of images as ever was very high which was reflected in the fact that the judge held back 38 images after the first round. Due to the range of subjects and the quality of the images judging was not an easy task. Macclesfield were well represented by 7 members (details below). It was a very tight scoring evening with only 10 points separating the clubs. Macclesfield had a very good number held back but we were slightly behind going into the final judging, but I am please to say we were able to claw back our deficit in the final round. In the end we tied with Leek on 206 points with 2 top scoring (20 point) images from Paul Scott -Alter Ego and Steve Gresty – Velocipede. The final 20 point image going to Paul Matthews of Leek.  The full set of scores can be found here: 50th Robertshaw Trophy 11th October 2018 Results

Season 2017 – 2018

By News No Comments

Well the 2017-2018 season has come to an end and thank you to all those who came to the club over the season.

A big thank you to all our members for supporting the club, to all those who have volunteered their time across the season. A big thank you to the committee members again who volunteer their time not just in the season but throughout the year.  Equally a big thank you to all those who submitted images in the internal competitions and external competitions which enabled us to regain both the Robertshaw and High Peak Trophies.

Some items of note though:

  • Congratulation to Malcolm Brunt for winning the President’s Cup reflecting his work over the season. There were a few others who could have so nearly received this, but sadly there is only one cup. They are however worthy of a mention: Irene Lea and Keith Parker, both of whom have contributed so much this season.
  • Congratulations most also go to Anthony Gosling, Paul Scott, Dave Boam and Conor Molloy  who again have shared with us their fantastic images and we’re looking forward to more in the new season.
  • For those who weren’t able to get to the library we will be showing our Annual Exhibition up at Tegg’s Nose over the coming weeks.
  • A big thank you to Val and Vince for putting together such an excellent programme this season. We are always after suggestions and ideas so please don’t hold back.
  • We were sorry to see Kevin and Alison Lomax depart for more exotic climes but thank them for all their support over the seasons and wish them well in their new adventure.

There have been a lot of changes during the season and equally a lot of changes in the pipeline. We’ll ensure these are covered in the minutes of the AGM so I hope you will take a few moments to read the minutes of the AGM when they have been finalised, but to headline some of the items:

  • GDPR, how we plan to keep details of members and use this data
  • Subscription, we’ll be reviewing our subscription over the closed season
  • Season Length
  • Changes to the committee
  • Next season’s competitions and potential new cup
  • Exhibition Reprise

I hope you have enjoyed the season and I look forward to an equally enjoyable 2018-2019 season.

In the meantime have a great summer and see you in September, if not before.
